A Moment of Respect Between Military and Funeral Procession

In a touching moment that captured the hearts of many, a group of soldiers from the King\’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery paused to salute a funeral procession in London. The event unfolded as two horses from W Uden and Sons Family Funeral Directors led a cortege through a quiet residential street. Their journey was interrupted by a unit of mounted soldiers, who were also accompanied by additional horses.

The King\’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery is a ceremonial unit of the British Army with a long history of participating in royal and state events. Their duties include firing salutes at significant occasions and taking part in military parades. They also serve as the King\’s Life Guard for one month each year, staffing sentry postings at the Horse Guards building in Whitehall. Additionally, they are responsible for providing the gun carriage and black horses used in state funerals—making their encounter with the funeral procession particularly meaningful.

As the funeral cortege approached, the convoy came to a stop to allow the soldiers to pass. An officer near the front of the unit took the opportunity to pay his respects. He solemnly saluted the procession, honoring the woman who was being laid to rest. This gesture was followed by the command \”eyes right,\” which directed the unit to turn their heads to the right—a highly respectful act typically reserved for saluting a superior officer.

The funeral directors shared the poignant video on Instagram and YouTube, where it quickly gained attention. The clip has received nearly 60,000 likes from viewers across both platforms. On YouTube, the caption reads: \”Whilst travelling to a funeral for a very special lady we were extremely privileged to see some of the King\’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery who are based in Woolwich. Can we also show some praise for the absolutely amazingly behaved horses Jester and Joker who did us really proud?\”

The footage shows the funeral horses waiting patiently as the military unit escorted its own horses down the opposite side of the road. Some of the military horses appear slightly frightened, hesitating before proceeding. One officer seems to apologize to the carriage driver for the delay. Once the soldiers have passed, the funeral horses resume their journey when commanded by the driver.

The funeral care firm, which operates offices throughout London and Kent, expressed pride in the behavior of Jester and Joker. They described the horses as \”the most beautiful, well-behaved horses you\’ll ever meet.\” The company also thanked the King\’s Troop for showing respect to the loved one on her final journey.

Social media users flooded the comments section with praise for the touching gesture. One user wrote: \”Nice respect from the soldier who saluted the funeral procession.\” Another commented: \”This is steeped in such grace, dignity and respect upon so many beautiful levels.\” A third said: \”Total respect to army riders and funeral staff.\”

The King\’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, stationed in Woolwich, plays a vital role in royal ceremonies. They fire salutes for events such as the King\’s Birthday Parade, royal birthdays, and births. The unit, which has around 140 members, was founded in 1947 at the request of then-King George VI, who wanted to revive the tradition of firing royal salutes on state occasions.

This moment of respect between the military and the funeral procession highlights the deep traditions and values that continue to shape British ceremonial life. It serves as a reminder of the honor and dignity that accompany even the most solemn of journeys.
