The Journey of an Illustrator and Her Green Friends

Lee Da, a 43-year-old illustrator, once had a reputation as a “plant serial killer.” Every plant she tried to grow would end up dying. However, after three years of dedicated care, she finally started to understand the art of nurturing them. Today, her plants have grown so much that she can no longer bring in new ones. This transformation is captured in her comic essay Green Friend, published by Via Books.

Lee Da first gained attention about 20 years ago during her college years when she began posting illustrated diaries on her website. This earned her the nickname “first-generation internet star” at the time. During this period, she majored in creative writing and theology but rarely attended classes. Instead, she spent her time drawing every day. Her latest book, which explores the companion plants in her home, offers heartfelt stories that mirror the sincerity of her earlier work.

A Love for Animals and Fear of Loss

Lee Da often talks about her desire to raise puppies and kittens, but she hesitates to take the step. This is because, although she loves animals, she fears their death. She frequently dreams of being burdened with animals, which she considers nightmares.

“Honestly, the death of a one-year-old cat and a camellia tree that’s been alive for a year don’t feel the same, do they? With animals, you have to become family, but with plants, it’s enough to just coexist,” she said. This sentiment highlights the different emotional connections people can form with living beings.

Evolution of an Artist

Now in her 22nd year as an illustrator, Lee Da\’s artistic world has undergone significant changes. Her recent books reflect a soft, warm sensibility, contrasting with the prickly edge of her early works in her 20s.

“When I was younger, my perspective was focused only on myself. I also cared a lot about others’ opinions. My first book was heavily tinged with self-loathing. Once I finished exploring myself, my gaze turned outward,” she explained. This shift in focus has led her to create works like travelogues of the Trans-Siberian Railway and diaries that observe cities and nature.

A New Perspective

Lee Da’s journey from a self-focused artist to someone who looks outward has shaped her storytelling. Her experiences with plants and animals have influenced her work, adding depth and warmth to her narratives.

Through her comics, she shares personal reflections and observations, making her work relatable and engaging. Her ability to connect with readers through both her art and her words has solidified her place as a respected figure in the world of illustration.

Conclusion

Lee Da’s story is one of growth, learning, and emotional exploration. From her early days as an internet star to her current role as a thoughtful and reflective artist, she continues to evolve. Her work not only captures the beauty of nature but also the complexities of human emotions. As she continues to share her journey, her readers are reminded of the importance of patience, connection, and the quiet joy found in everyday life.
